that the idea of Shewan Tomes & Co. handling the Oil business
in Canton will be unacceptable to the Texas Company and to
ourselves, because to split the Hongkong and Canton business
would cause a harmful decentralization and would give rise to
complications. However, as the proposal is communicated to
us by our advisers, we have asked Messrs. Shewan Tomes what
their terms would be in connection with this desire of theirs.
We feel that we could not have carried our point
with His Excellency the Governor so readily but for the support of the Colonial Office, and we wish to record our grateful appreciation of the unfailing kindness and attention you have always extended to us.
