that the idea of Shewan Tomes & Co. handling the Oil business

in Canton will be unacceptable to the Texas Company and to

ourselves, because to split the Hongkong and Canton business

would cause a harmful decentralization and would give rise to

complications. However, as the proposal is communicated to

us by our advisers, we have asked Messrs. Shewan Tomes what

their terms would be in connection with this desire of theirs.

with His Excellency the Governor so readily but for the support of the Colonial Office, and we wish to record our grateful appreciation of the unfailing kindness and attention you have always extended to us.

We are, Sir,

Your obedient servants

For Sanders, Rehders & Co., Lid.,

Ellan

Director.
